"Youth didn’t create the climate crisis, but we will have to live with the consequences of the Environmental Protection Agency’s actions for the rest of our lives. The climate crisis has actively impacted the ability of young people, including myself, to lead healthful lives and receive an education. The United States government has burdened us with the responsibility for the future of our world in the wake of a crisis they helped create. We are terrified for the future of our generation, and we demand that the court uphold its duty to protect our constitutional rights."
As a young environmental activist, Maya is fighting the climate crisis in various ways. Besides joining this lawsuit to secure her legal right to a safe climate, she is a community organizer that has rallied fellow young people and applied pressure on elected officials to invest in the future of their constituents by prioritizing renewable energy and climate education. She has also taken steps to reduce her carbon footprint by adopting a vegan diet, purchasing second-hand items, not getting her driver's license, and reducing her amount of airplane trips wherever possible.
Despite her activism and lifestyle changes, Maya experiences climate anxiety, which began in 2020, and fears for the state of her future and that of her younger siblings. She's passionate about playing soccer, but must regularly use a steroid inhaler to participate in physical activities due to the bronchospasms that result from her asthma. Increasing wildfire smoke driven by the climate crisis worsens her asthma, gives her severe headaches, and limits her ability to focus in school. Rising temperatures impact her ability to engage in soccer and other activities that bring her joy, causing fatigue, headaches, and burning her feet when playing on hot turf. She hopes that leaders around the world, and particularly in the US, will finally start to take accountability for their role in perpetuating the climate crisis and take the necessary steps for the protection of our planet.
